Patrick Chan powers his way to Cup of China victory

Canada’s Patrick Chan roared to victory in the men’s event at the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Cup of China in Beijing on Saturday.

Chan was third after the men’s short on Friday, but scored 196.31 in his free program for a combined score of 279.72.

Boyang Jin of China finished second with a combined score of 278.54, while Sergei Voronov of Russia was third with 243.76.

“The program felt very methodical,” Chan said. ”I didn’t give it more energy than it needed. I told myself to relax and not try and rush through the program.
 
“Even the fall during the quad Salchow I made sure I didn’t panic and just continued to do the program as I did at home and forget about the mistake.”

Osmond slips to 2nd

​Earlier Saturday, European silver medallist Elena Radionova of Russia won the ladies event.

Radionova, who was second after the short program, received 135.15 points for her free skate to finish with a total of 205.90.

Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond – who was the leader after the ladies short program – finished second overall with 196 points after placing third in the free skate.

“I started the program really strong,” Osmond said. ”Then I did two mistakes that were really uncharacteristic for me. That’s something I just have to work on leading into the next big competitions. I need to keep my focus a little bit longer even if the program is going really well.”

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, also from Russia, was third.

Ashley Wagner of the United States, the 2016 world silver medalist, finished sixth, one place ahead of compatriot Karen Chen.

Shibutani siblings get by Weaver & Poje

American ice dance siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani rode their free dance to a win over Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poe of Canada.

The Americans were a very close second following the short dance but scored the best free dance to edge the Canadians by a score of 185.13 to 181.54.

“This season is all about building,” Weaver said. ”There are many new things for us. We are learning from the beginning and that takes time and it’s not always an instantaneous result. Everything can get better even though we didn’t make any major mistakes.”

The Russian pair of Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin were third with a combined score of 177.41

Canadians earn pairs bronze

Canadians Liubov Ilyushechknia and Dylan Moscovitch broke up a possible host sweep of the pairs podium, taking bronze with a score of 191.54.

China’s Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang (203.76) struck gold, while their compatriots Cheng Peng and Yang Jin (197.96) skated to silver.

The Cup of China is the fifth event in the International Skating Union’s Grand Prix Series. The sixth and final competition is the NHK Trophy which will be held in Sapporo, Japan, on Nov. 26-27.
