Redblacks hold small lead in Grey Cup after 1st quarter

The Ottawa Redblacks are up 10-7 at the Grey Cup after Ray Early hit a 37-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the opening quarter.

Ottawa QB Henry Burris opened the scoring with a touchdown run on Ottawa’s first drive.

Burris plunged into the end zone from one-yard out, as the Redblacks benefited from a defensive pass interference call after a coach’s challenge to get the ball at the goal line with a fresh set of downs.

The Stampeders came right back with a four-play, 79-yard drive highlighted by a 51-year pass to Marquay McDaniel. Slotback Jerome Messam, form nearby Brampton, cappped the drive, coming out of the backfield to haul in a seven-yard touchdown pass.

There was drama over the status of Burris immediately prior to the game.

But Burris was back out on the field throwing with the other quarterbacks after the national anthem. And he led the Redblacks offence out after the Stampeders punted the ball away.

Calgary lost leading receiver Marquay McDaniel to a shoulder injury late in the first quarter.

The Stampeders posted on Twitter that McDaniel was done for the game.

He left at the 13:40 mark of the first quarter, and with Ottawa leading 10-7.
